‘Safe to School – Safe to Home’ enters phase 2 in Vietnam
March was a busy month in Vietnam for the ‘Safe to School – Safe to Home’ programme, as the lead country implementation entered its second phase: replication and expansion.
To start the month, the GRSP Vietnam team held a ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop for 40 teachers from the new schools taking up the programme to learn and practice the training methods and familiarize themselves with the Teacher Guides and e-learning materials. Later in the month on March 20, Duy Minh Primary School, one of the new intervention sites in 2014, hosted an official launch ceremony to announce the commencement of school-based road safety lessons from April.
Attending the cermeony were a number of high ranking officers, including Vice Chairman of Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, Director of Provincial Department of Training and Education, President of Duy Minh Commune People Committee, local traffic police, media representatives, school teachers, parents and school children from Duy Minh Primary School and Duy Minh Secondary Schools.
The event was a stand out success with commitment statements from the school principals, addresses from the key implementing agencies as well as a terrific set of performances by the students all around the theme of road safety.
Following the launch, representatives from local stakeholders, GRSP and Ha Nam Provincial Traffic Safety Committee participated in the Project Implementation Workshop to fully prepare the new schools to implement the ‘Safe to School – Safe to Home’ methodology.
Ha Nam province in Vietnam was the original launch site for the ‘Safe to School – Safe to Home’ programme in June 2013. The programme is currently in various stages of implementation in China, Nigeria, Morocco and Zambia and continues to expand in Vietnam. ‘Safe to School – Safe to Home’ is a project developed with the support of the Global Road Safety Initiative, one of the world’s largest private sector road safety collaborations, funded by Michelin, Renault, Shell, Total and Toyota.
