GRSI: Strong partnership continues in 2012
Over the past several years since its inception by a group of leading global corporations, the Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI), has delivered important road safety projects in Brazil, China and several countries in Southeast Asia.
In 2012, thanks to the support of GRSI participating partners – Michelin, Renault, Shell, Total and Toyota – GRSI will continue to support road safety programmes in these areas, while simultaneously expanding its impact to India and several countries in Africa.
“We are tremendously pleased at the consistent growth of the Global Road Safety Initiative”, stated Ian Hughes, Asia Regional Manager for the Global Road Safety Partnership. “And 2012 is off to a strong start, with around 240 participants expected to attend the Asia Regional Seminar in early March. It is an unprecedented number of attendees that we are proud to bring together”.
In addition to the annual Asia Regional Seminar, which will host representatives from government, businesses and civil society, other projects for the year include continued support for the implementation of the Proactive Partnership Strategy (PPS) in key cities in several countries, including in Brazil, Cambodia, Nigeria, Zambia and Morocco, and child road safety projects in Viet Nam with the support of the Viet Nam Red Cross. Additional child road safety projects for the Asia region are in development with Sesame Workshop, a member of the Global Road Safety Partnership, and Save the Children Foundation based in Australia.
One of the key projects for GRSI will be the continued support for the implementation of the Proactive Partnership Strategy (PPS). An innovative process for managing road safety and reducing death and injury from road crashes that has been developed through GRSI, the Proactive Partnership Strategy uniquely creates a road safety culture that is developed within a city, therefore ensuring sustainability of the activities undertaken.
The PPS model has been successfully implemented in cities in Brazil, winning international recognition and awarded for its innovative approaches that have significantly reduced road crashes, injuries and fatalities. In 2012 GRSI will not only continue supporting its development in Brazil with the Ministry of Health Commission as PPS is rolled out in each of the five state capitals, but as well with pilot programs in the capital cities of Zambia and Nigeria, in Morocco and in Siem Reap in Cambodia.
