Leading legislative change for road safety in Cambodia

Closing a gap in road laws that currently exclude the requirement for passengers – particularly children – to wear a motorcycle helmet are now being addressed in Cambodia thanks to the leadership of the Global Road Safety Partnership and the support they have provided to the Cambodia Red Cross.

In April, the National Road Safety Committee nominated several individuals including GRSP Cambodia Programme Manager, Mr. Sovann Kong, and Road Safety Manager of the Cambodia Red Cross, Mr. Sophal Khem, to establish a Techincal Working Group. The group will work with the Council of Jurists and the Economic Social and Cultural Council to improve legisliation for road traffic laws and the National Road Safety Policy in Cambodia. Appointments for the Technical working Group were made by the Secretary General of the National Road Safety Committee, UNG Chun Hour.

“The Global Road Safety Partnership and our partner, the Cambodia Red Cross, are very pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of the working group”, stated Sovann. “We will work hard to effectively fill existing gaps in road traffic laws in Cambodia, for the safety of our people and the country as a whole”.

“The support of the Cambodia Red Cross is especially critical”, affirmed Meas Chandy, GRSP Programme Coordinator for Cambodia.  “Their expertise in addressing road safety in Cambodia combined with their auxiliary role to the government makes their participation in the working group very valuable”.
