A city focus on road safety in Morocco
Building on from rigorous planning and a successful mini workshop held in the middle of the year, October saw the official launch ceremony and first full session workshop of the Moroccan project, ‘Mohammedia, a Model City for the Protection of Road Users’, a joint collaboration between two GRSP programmes, GRSI-2 and EU MENA.
The successful launch was held under the aegis of the Wilaya of Casablanca and the Mohammedia Prefecture in the presence of Mohammedia Governor Mrs. Fouzia Imensar. Both the launch and the following workshop were supported by the GRSI funding partners, Michelin, Renault, Shell, Total and Toyota, the EU MENA project, as well as local corporate and civil society partners.
The two events were well attended by participating ministries, the traffic police, the department of education, media as well as the private sector and were noted as the first time all sectors with input into road safety had met together to plan and implement a fully coordinated city focussed road safety initiative.
The Advisory Committee and four Technical Working Commissions have since finalized work plans, budgets are submitted and implementations are scheduled with a five point black spot improvement programme set to lead the push ahead of educational and enforcement initiatives.
