Back to news

GRSP wishes to announce the appointment of our new CEO, Mr Dave Cliff who started with us in early April.

Dave joined New Zealand Police in 1983 and has held a range of general duties, criminal investigation and road policing positions throughout New Zealand.  In 2007 he was appointed as the District Commander for Canterbury where he led the emergency response to the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.  In 2011 he was appointed to the role of Assistant Commissioner for the South Island and in 2012 he was appointment as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 2012 Royal Honours.  He received a second Royal Honour in 2013 when appointed as a Member of the Order of St John (MStJ).

Dave was appointed to the position of Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for national road policing in 2012 and has provided road policing advice and presentations for the World Bank and the OECD in several low- and middle-income countries.  In mid-2015 he was seconded to the Canterbury Earthquake Authority within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as the Assistant Chief Executive to lead the disestablishment of the Authority until February 2016.  In March of that year he began a five-month secondment with the GRSP in a capacity building role before returning to Police in August 2016.

Dave succeeds Dr Barry Watson who has returned to Australia to be with family.

Together we can save millions of lives.
