About UNECE

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was established in 1947 to promote pan-European economic integration. UNECE brings together 56 countries located in the European Union, non-EU Western and Eastern Europe, South-East Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States and North America. More than 70 international professional organizations and other non-governmental organizations also take part in UNECE activities.

Long mandated with responsibility for road safety, UNECE pioneered road safety activities in the United Nations system with the establishment of an Ad Hoc Working Group on the prevention of road accidents in 1950. In 1988, the Working Party on Road Traffic Safety, an intergovernmental body, was established and remains the only permanent body in the United Nations system that focuses on improving road safety.

UNECE and Road Safety
