Successful Africa Road Safety Seminar 2024 comes to an end
The Africa Road Safety Seminar 2024, held on October 8 and 9 in Nairobi, was a great success. Organized by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), in association with our partners at the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), the event saw the presence of over 200 participants from across the Africa region and over 40 local and international speakers.
Speakers included representatives from the FIA Foundation, World Health Organisation, the World Bank, Johns Hopkins University – International Injury Research Unit and Vital Strategies.
The Seminar, which focused on implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action 2021 to 2030 in Africa, held sessions on:
- powered two-wheelers,
- speed management in the African context,
- road safety finance,
- developing motorcycle helmet standards,
- youth engagement in road safety,
- collaborative approaches to enhancing safer mobility,
- advocacy for evidence-based road safety policies, and
- the challenges and opportunities in implementing safer infrastructure in the region.
The Seminar also saw the soft launch of the “Guideline for the Implementation of Helmet Standards”, which will be available on the GRSP website by the end of the year.
“This was a great Seminar and one of the best we have held in the African region”, said David Cliff, GRSP CEO. He added, “It was wonderful to see so many participants discussing challenges, opportunities and road safety solutions in person. In those two days, many relationships were formed, and a lot of evidence-based knowledge was shared and discussed. I believe many participants will return to their respective countries enriched by the conversations they had and will start implementing what was discussed in Nairobi.” Further, he said, “I want to thank the co-organizers for the great work before and during the event, and I also want to thank our members, without whom these important events would not be possible.”.
